Exporting a Puzzle to the Web
- Select Export from the File menu.
- Choosing "Web" will export an interactive crossword/wordsearch puzzle that can be uploaded to a website and played over the internet as Crossword Forge Live
- Name - Enter a name for your puzzle folder here. This folder name will be part of the web address for your online puzzle. We highly recommend avoiding spaces in naming your folder. Also, remember that the web is case sensitive so we recommend all lower case letters.
- Enable Hint menu - Crossword Forge Live has a Hint menu that the player can use. The Hint menu includes "Show Current Letter," "Show Current Word," and "Show Every Word." Disable the Hint menu by deselecting the checkbox.
- Enable Check menu - Crossword Forge Live has a Check menu that the player can use. The Check menu inclues "Check Current Letter," "Check Current Word," and "Check Every Word." Disable the Hint menu by deselecting the checkbox.
- Click on Export. Crossword Forge will create a folder with the name you selected. The folder contains everything you need to put your puzzle online.
- For most web hosting options, upload the folder to your website in the location you prefer. Once the folder is in place, everything is ready. Don't forget to add a link from one of your other pages to the folder address. (You can just reference the folder itself, since it contains an index.html.)
- Upload to the web using .Mac with iWeb™
[image]
- Go to your iDisk.
- Open the Web folder*
- Open the Sites folder and drag your puzzle folder there.
- Now open iWeb.
- Create a link to your puzzle in iWeb**.
Choose to link to "An External Page".
Type in your URL: http://web.mac.com/user-name/puzzle-folder/index.html
(In this case, user-name is your .mac user name and puzzle-folder is the name of the puzzle folder you dropped in your iDisk.)
- Publish to the web.
- You're done!
- For .Mac users with HomePage™:
- Go to your iDisk (From the Finder, click on the Go menu and select your iDisk).
- Drop your newly created folder in the Sites folder.
- Open your folder and change the name of index.html to anything else (.Mac won't let you use index.html, so pick a unique name for the site, perhaps the name of your folder).
- Now go to the Apple website, and login to .Mac.
- Go to Homepage.
- Click on "Add Page."
- Select the "Advanced" tab.
- Click on "External.html."
- Select your folder and select the html file. Press "Choose" (If you don't see a file, go back to your iDisk and name your file something else.)
- In "Edit your Homepage," give the page a title and press "Publish".
- Now, go to your homepage and click on your link. Viola, you should see your Crossword Forge Live puzzle.

- Press the "Add More Content Areas" link.
- Repeat the last 3 steps until you have 4 content areas that contain the following files that crossword forge created: index.html, cwf_live.swf, backdrop.jpg, and puzzle.xml. NOTE: Your backdrop.jpg and puzzle.xml files will likely have a different name, that is ok.
- Click the "Continue" button.
- At this point you are technically done, but we want to clean-up the interface to the puzzle.
- Select your newly created page and click properties.
- Click "Exclude this web page" on the window that appears and press "Submit"
- Now create a link to the index.html file from one of your other pages. Select the page you want to link from and press "Edit". In the content area of one of these pages add html like the following <a href="http://<your_website_here>/upload/index.html">Click here for the puzzle</a> You will need to replace <your_website_here> with your class web address.
*What if Web folder doesn't exist? If you have never used iWeb, the folder may not be there yet.
We suggest that you first use iWeb and create and publish a home page, and then follow these
directions to link your Crossword Forge puzzle to it.
**How do I add an external link in iWeb? (from iWeb's Help)
- To add text to a webpage in iWeb, you must type the text in a text box. iWeb templates include text boxes with placeholder text, which you can replace with your own. You can create new text boxes by clicking the Text button in the toolbar.

- In iWeb, select the text you want to turn into a hyperlink.
- If the iWeb Link Inspector isn't open, click Inspector in the toolbar (or choose View > Show Inspector), and then click the Link Inspector button.
- In the Link Inspector, select "Enable as a hyperlink," and then choose the option from the Link To pop-up menu called "An External Page."
